The son of a mineworker, David Storey was born in Yorkshire in 1933 and studied at the Slade School of Art. His first, highly successful novel, This Sporting Life was published in 1960 and awarded the U.S. Macmillan fiction award. Since then he has written several successful novels, and seven plays, the most recent of which; Cromwell, and the Farm were both given London seasons last year.

Home itself won the Evening Standard Best Play of the Year award in 1970, and the U.S. Critics award for the Best Play of 1970, and won for Storey the first Writer of the Year award given by Variety Club of Great Britain.
