Place and time – Oxford, late 19th century. How can two young men, final year undergraduates, spend time with the two young women they adore when they have no older woman on hand to act as their chaperone? Answer – very simple, they ‘persuade’ another friend to disguise himself as the aunt of one of them, thus Charley’s Aunt comes to Oxford. Unfortunately, as in all the best farces – and this is one of the very best – things go very wrong when the father of one of the young women is entranced by the disguised ‘aunt’, the original aunt herself comes to town to visit her nephew bringing with her the long lost love of the friend disguised as the aunt…and so it goes on…
